After three years under the exclusion diet as a treatment for my EOE, being totally asymptomatic, I started to feel some symptoms sporadically. Most of the times those were food impaction, which required hospitalisation twice. The other food impactions episodes I could manage at home, even though it resulted in many hours with thorax pain.
I never knew what could be the reason for this, since I was following my diet strictly, maybe by mistake I could have eaten something I couldn’t once or twice, but I was sure I hadn’t eaten any of the food responsible for my EOE in a continuous way as to cause me that effect.
Because I was living abroad when these incidents happened, I visited my doctor once I arrived back in Spain. He told me about the possibility of start taking omeprazole (a proton pump inhibitor) in high dosages as a new treatment for the EOE.
So I started taking omeprazole, specifically the pepticum brand, one tablet every 12 hours, this equates to 40 mg per day. At the beginning I was scared, although I could eat again all that food that I hadn’t tried during the last three years, it frightened me the idea of having another impaction episode. The previous times when I choked, it was unexpected as I wasn’t eating food that I wasn’t supposed to eat or at least I wasn’t aware of being doing it. However now, I knew it could happen any time as I was eating normally all kind of food, and that feeling was a bit stressful. As the days passed and I continued eating without any problems or difficulties I started to get more and more relaxed. A Few months after I started taking these tablets my doctor repeated the gastroscopy and the test showed no presence of eosinophils.
Nowadays, after 4 months following this treatment, I am completely asymptomatic. My quality of life has improved notably, due to both the absence of impactions and the fact of being able to enjoy things that I couldn’t before, as a meal in a restaurant without worrying about if there is something in the menu that I can’t eat, or traveling without carrying any special food just in case there is nothing suitable for my diet.
